Do you need an llms.txt app for your Shopify store?

Probably not, if what you want is for AI assistants to recommend your products. An llms.txt file is cheap and harmless, but nothing we know of shows it changes what the assistants say.

What llms.txt is

It's a proposed convention: a plain-text file at yourstore.com/llms.txt that summarises your site and links to your key pages, written for AI tools rather than people. Several Shopify apps generate one for you, some free, some for a few dollars a month.

What Google says

Google answered this directly in its guide to its AI features in Search: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search." It adds that doing so "will neither harm nor help your site's visibility or rankings in Google Search, as Google Search ignores them" (Google Search Central, updated 10 July 2026).

We haven't seen published evidence that an llms.txt file changes which products ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Claude recommend either. If you find some, send it to us and we'll update this post.

What does decide it

The things that move AI shopping answers are less exotic:

• Product data the assistants can read: a real barcode (GTIN), a specific product type and category, and a description that says what the product is. See the three feed fields that decide whether ChatGPT can sell your products.
• Search crawlers that can reach your product pages. Blocking OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Claude-SearchBot in robots.txt can keep you out of answers; an llms.txt file can't undo that.
• Being named where the assistants already look. In our own snapshot of 537 cited sources for one category, review sites and magazines got almost all of the citations and the store got none (the breakdown).

When an llms.txt app is fine

If it's free and takes a minute, there's no harm in having one: Google says it neither helps nor hurts. Just don't pay for it as your AI visibility plan, and don't take a green tick in an app as proof that the assistants will recommend you.

How to know if anything worked

Measure the answers, not the files. Ask the same buying questions on several assistants for a few weeks, count how often you're named in the answers that clearly say either way, and look at who gets named instead. How to check whether ChatGPT recommends your Shopify store walks through it by hand.
