Shopify Agentic Storefronts: what it does, and what it doesn't do for AI visibility
If you sell on Shopify, your products may already be listed in AI assistants. Shopify calls this agentic storefronts. It's useful, it's mostly automatic, and it's easy to misread as "AI will now recommend me". Here's what Shopify's own documentation says, and where the gap is.
What it does
In Shopify's words, agentic storefronts "lets customers discover and purchase your products in AI channels, such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta" (Shopify help center). It is "active by default for eligible stores", and you manage which channels you sell on in Sales channels > Agentic in your Shopify admin.
Your products reach those channels through Shopify Catalog. They're listed "by default with their title, description, options, images, price, availability, and other key attributes", and "your eligible products are automatically discoverable" (Shopify help center). You can also map which of your fields feed the Catalog's title, description and category (mapping your product data).
What it doesn't do
It makes your products available to AI channels. It doesn't decide whether an assistant recommends them. Shopify is clear about this in the preview tool it gives you: "Agentic storefronts channels often re-rank results based on their own logic, so what's displayed in the preview might differ from what customers view in the actual AI experience" (Shopify help center).
So being listed is the entry ticket. Whether ChatGPT names your grinder or a competitor's when someone asks for "the best quiet grinder for a small kitchen" depends on the assistant's own ranking, on what it reads about you elsewhere, and on how well your product data answers the question.
What you can control
- Complete, specific product data. Shopify's advice is to "focus on having complete and well-structured product information in Shopify Catalog". Specific product types and categories, real descriptions, barcodes where your products have them, current prices and stock.
- Your channel settings. Check Sales channels > Agentic: which channels are on, and whether new ones enrol automatically.
- Where you're mentioned. Assistants lean on review sites, buying guides and videos for "which should I buy" questions. Being in those sources is often what gets a store named.
- Crawler access. AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot read your pages directly. Make sure your robots.txt doesn't block them from product pages.
How to see what actually happens
The preview in your admin shows Catalog search, not the answers shoppers see. To see those, ask the assistants the questions your customers ask, more than once, and count how often you're named, as a plain count with unclear answers left out. We wrote up a simple way to do that by hand.
